Duncan Miller
Q1 What are you doing now? |
I currently work as a senior guidance navigation and control engineer at SpaceX, where I help develop the algorithms that steer the rocket and spacecraft to and from orbit. I also support mission operations as one of the primary operators for rendezvous and docking with the International Space Station |
Q2 How did the Science Fair change your life? |
The Detroit science fair was my first real exposure to engineering as a profession, and affirmed for me that a career in science and engineering was in my future. My experience at ISEF also inspired me to continually challenge myself throughout my academic career, to seek out difficult problems and adventures, and to learn from my peers as much as possible. |
Q3 What did you like the most about the Science Fair? |
I most enjoyed being surrounded by hundreds of other like-minded individuals who all shared the same class of excitement and passion that I was starting to foster for the math and sciences. Both at SEFMD and later ISEF, I made great relationships with the fellow students, in a surprisingly friendly and cooperative environment. Every student I met was a specialist in their area of study and the science fair showed me the breadth that physics and engineering had to offer, inspiring in me a curiosity that continues to this day. |
Q4 What career advice do you wish someone told you when you were younger? Career advise you wish to share? |
1) There is no substitute for a good work ethic. 2) Engineering with integrity is the only engineering worth doing. 3) Be humble enough to recognize that everyone can make mistakes. |
Q5 Any specific advice on becoming involved in Science and Engineering? |
Technology doesn't magically improve on its own. It is through the ingenuity and hard work of individuals working together that advancements in science and engineering occur. This means that there is an opportunity for you the individual to make a difference. |
Q6 Why be a part of the science fair after high school and college |
The science fair is a way to learn from the inventiveness of others, connect with current and future leaders in the scientific community, and inspire the next generation of technologists. |
