Q1  What are you doing now?
I am a biomedical researcher at the University of Michigan studying virus-host interactions during viral entry.

Q2  How did the Science Fair change your life?
It gave me an opportunity to conduct hypothesis driven science for the first time. I loved the process and explaining my experiments to the judges and seeing them respond positively gave me confidence that I could "do science". Winning the grand award in 2003 allowed me to travel to the international science fair where I saw just how impressive science projects could be. I am now a scientist, which I attribute a lot to this science fair experience.

Q3  What did you like the most about the Science Fair?
I liked the judging. I was SO nervous, but it was really fun to be able to explain what I had done and why I had done it.

Q4  What career advice do you wish someone told you when you were younger? Career advise you wish to share?
If you like science, you can be a scientist! It is not an off limit career reserved only for certain types of people that don't look like you. You can work in a lab and study fascinating things and change the world.

Q5  Any specific advice on becoming involved in Science and Engineering?
Don't be discouraged. It is a hard field, but you are smart and with patience and perseverance, you can do it. Look for opportunities to get involved in summer programs (often free) and stay in contact with people you have met along the way. They can help you in the future!
