Jamie teaches Chemistry for Warren Consolidated Schools at the Macomb Mathematics Science Technology Center (MMSTC). She attended Michigan State University and earned a B.S. in Human Biology and Health and Humanities (Bioethics). Following graduation, she remained at MSU in a virology laboratory for three years working on gene sequencing and virus resistance in plants. The work was exciting but she knew research was not her calling. She returned to school at the University of Detroit Mercy to earn her teaching certification in Chemistry and Biology and later her Master’s Degree in Teaching from Saginaw Valley State University.
The moment she stepped in the classroom, Jamie
knew teaching was her passion. Over the course of her tenure, her goal has been
to motivate young scientist by integrating experiences that immerse the
students in the scientific community.
Jamie and her students have worked with NASA’s Teaching from Space
Microgravity Program, The Detroit Chapter of the American Society of Metals, and
many Universities throughout Michigan.
Science fair season at MMSTC is an exciting
time for students and one of Jamie’s favorite times of year. There is nothing
that makes Jamie more proud than seeing her students at the SEFMD Fair
interacting with peers and professionals, discussing their projects and
interests. She feels the process of a science fair is the ultimate teaching
tool. Students can develop so many
skills beyond content knowledge and become empowered by the understanding of
what it truly means to be a member of the scientific community.
