David Michael Egan is a graduate of Wayne State University, with a Bachelors of Science in Education. He majored in Biology and minored in Integrated Sciences and is certified to teach Secondary Sciences. Additionally, David holds a Masters in Education from Oakland University with a focus on International Education and the IB Program.

David began his professional practice at Pontiac Northern High School. After teaching there he traveled to Indonesia on a Fulbright Scholarship, teaching at a high school and university in East Java. Following completion of his Fulbright Scholarship, he accepted a position at Mentari International School in Jakarta. Upon returning to the United States, David taught Middle School Science at Huda School for five years. Currently, David is in his first year teaching 7th Grade Science at Larson Middle School in Troy, Michigan.

David’s first experience with the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit, SEFMD, was as science director at Huda School. During his five years at Huda he mentored more than 300 student participants in the SEFMD. In these five years his students won six Grand Awards including the Grand Award in the team division for the past three years. Additionally, his students garnered many Gold Awards and Professional Awards. David is looking forward to bringing the SEFMD to Larson Middle School and plans on starting an after school Science Fair Club next year.

David’s aspiration is to not only teach students the “science of nature” but to also teach them the “nature of science”. He believes this is best done through inquiry-based learning and problem-solving using the scientific method and engineering and design processes. The SEFMD not only gives students the opportunity to deeply engage in all aspects of STEM but it also provides the opportunity for students to hone crucial skills such as organization, time management, communication, collaboration, problem solving, critical thinking and creative thinking. Additionally, it provides students with many interdisciplinary connections and offers real world context when projects seek to address local and global issues.

David lives in Huntington Woods with the love of his life Manjula and their two boys Shiva and Krishna. They enjoy traveling, spending time outdoors and attending cultural events in Detroit and the greater Metropolitan area. David is looking forward to viewing the total solar eclipse with his son this summer, as he holds a keen interest in Solar Astronomy.
