Ardis Maciolek Selected as ‘Teacher of the Year’ for 2005

 

Ardis Maciolek, Science Teacher from Grosse Pointe North High School,  in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, has been selected as the Science Fair ‘Teacher of the Year’ for 2005.  The award is given annually to a teacher that best demonstrates encouragement of students in the sciences and long term support for the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit. 

 

Ardis was selected from a number of teachers that have participated in the science fair.  Final selection was announced on Tuesday, February 2, 2005 by Tim Fino, Fair Director of the Fair.  The award is given on behalf of the Engineering Society of Detroit in conjunction with the ESD affiliate council with a formal presentation during National Engineer’s Week and a special recognition dinner on February 23, 2005.

 

The following is a biography of Ardis Maciolek

Ardis Maciolek teaches Astronomy and Earth Science at Grosse Pointe North H.S. and is the Planetarium Director for the Grosse Pointe elementary schools. Since the early 1980’s, she has encouraged many students to undertake projects in Earth and Space Science.  Since 1988 she has worked with the national observatories to involve students in research and since 1989 she has advised the RATs, her school’s Radio Astronomy Team.  Ardis has had eight ISEF finalists in seven years, including teams of students from two different schools.  She has been a board member, president, and newsletter editor of the Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association (MESTA).  Ardis has also helped to organize MESTA’s “Rock Shop” at the annual Michigan Science Teachers Conference and she has been a regular presenter at the MDSTA, MSTA, and NSTA annual meetings.

 

 

The SEFMD will be held March 8-12, 2005 at Cobo Center in Detroit.  It is open to the public (free of charge) March 10-11 from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM.  Entry form deadline for competition in the fair is February 4, 2005 (February 11 if entering via the internet).  Students are encouraged to enter the Science Fair through their schools to earn recognition and key financial awards and scholarships.
