Science Fair winners receive $254,200 in awards at International Science & Engineering Fair in Albuquerque, NM
 Local student wins Best of Category

 

In a total of three award ceremonies, 7 students from the Detroit Metro area won numerous prestigious awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, including overall best of category.  These special awards were presented on May 17-18, 2007 and consisted of key awards from scientific, professional and educational organizations, governmental organizations, and overall category awards.

 

Temple He, 18, Troy High School, Troy, Michigan.   Project title:  “Period Analysis of Cataclysmic Variable X10 and Its Implications on the Origin of Low States”

American Astronomical Society and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, First Place

Award of a $5,000 scholarship.  In addition, $1,000 award to the Troy High School Science

Department.

United States Air Force, First Place Award of $3,000

United States Army, First Place Award of three $1,000 savings bonds plus a gold medallion
Physics – First Place – First place award of $3,000

Physics – Best of Category  Intel will present the winner with a $5,000 award and a high performance computer.  Additionally, a $1,000 grant will be given to his school and the Intel ISEF Affiliated fair he represents (Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit).

Seaborg SIYSS Award – The SIYSS is a multi-disciplinary seminar highlighting some of the most remarkable achievements by young scientists from around the world.  The students have the opportunity to visit scientific institutes, attend the Nobel lectures and press conferences, learn about Sweden and experience the extravagance of the Nobel festivities during their trip in December, 2007 (approximate value of $10,000).

 

Thiago Olson, 17, Stoney Creek High School, Rochester Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “Neutron Activation Analysis Using an Inertial Electrostatic Confinement Fusion Reactor”

            American Association of Physics Teachers and the American Physical Society, First Award of

$1,200 plus memberships and certificates

Vacuum Technology Division of the American Vacuum Society, First award of $750 plus an

Award of $750 to Stoney Creek High School Science Department and an award of $250 to the

student’s mentor

Amardeep Grewal, 18, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “An Extra Spin on Nerve Regeneration:  Synthesis of an Electrospun Spinal Cord Nerve Conduit”           

            Ashtavadhani Vidwan Ambati Subbaraya Chetty (AVASC) Foundation – Second Award of

$500 US Savings Bond for projects that display outstanding creativity, ingenuity and have the

potential to alleviate the human condition or mark a substantive advance in the scientific field.

Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering Category – Third Place award of $1,000

           

Harrison Nguyen, 16, Detroit Catholic Central High School, Novi, Michigan.  Project Title: “An Investigation of the Inhibition Mechanism of a Scutellaria Baicalensis Component”

            Drexel UniversityFull paid tuition scholarship of $120,000

            New Mexico State University – Full paid tuition, room, board, and books scholarship with an

            approximate value of $90,000

 

 

Shravani Mikkilinneni, 16, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  Dendrimer-based Nanodevices for Drug Delivery Across the Blood Brain Barrier”

            Patent and Trademark Office Society – First Award of $200

            United States Air Force – First Award of $3,000

Zackery Schroeder,17, Grosse Pointe North High School, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.  Project Title:  “Galaxy Clusters:  The Local Effects on Star Synthesis”

            Physics & Astronomy Category – Fourth Place Award of $500

 

 

Nicholas Ekladyous, 15, Cranbrook Kingswood School, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “Yielding to Pedestrians”

            American Statistical Association – Honorable Mention Award

Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering Category – Third Place award of $1,000

Engineering: Materials and Bioengineering Category First Place Award of $3,000
