Science Fair winners receive awards at International Science & Engineering Fair in Reno, NV

 

In a total of two award ceremonies, 6 students from the Detroit Metro area won seven prestigious awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in Reno, Nevada surpassing last years achievement of 5 students. These special awards were presented on May 14-15, 2009 and consisted of key awards from scientific, professional and educational organizations, governmental organizations, and overall category awards.

 

Michael Yurko,  15, Detroit Catholic Central High School, Novi, Michigan.   Project title:  “Convergence Acceleration for the Power Series Representation of the Exponential

Integral”         

American Mathematical Society, Karl Menger Award of Excellence, Honorable Mention

 

Shubhangi Arora, 15, Novi High School, Novi, Michigan.  Project Title:  “Identification of Genes in C. albicans that Contribute to Antifungal Resistance”

            American Society for Microbiology– F ifth Award of $250

Microbiology Category – First Place Award of $5,000

 

Rahul Pandey, 17, Stoney Creek High School, Rochester Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “A Microwave Metamaterial Lens with Negative Index of Refraction”

IEEE Foundation  – First Place Presidents Award of $10,000 Scholarship for study in Engineering or a related field (plus plaque, framed certificate, and membership to IEEE)

 

Andrew Rauh, 15, Divine Chile High School, Dearborn, Michigan.  Project Title: “Grow Your Own Gas: Making Cellulosic Ethanol from Common Biomass”

            Chemistry Category – Third Place Award of $1,000

 

David Sherman, 18, Wylie E. Groves High School, Beverly Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “Matching Preclusion for the (n,k)-Bubble-Sort Graphs”

            Mathematics Category – Third Place Award of $1,000

 

Connie Fu, 17, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan.  Project Title:  “The Role of Regulatory T Cells in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis”

            Medicine & Health Category – Fourth Place Award of $500
