Science Fair winners receive awards at International Science & Engineering Fair in San Jose, Calif.

 

In a total of two award ceremonies, 5 student projects (7 students) from the Detroit Metro area won seven prestigious awards at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in San Jose, California. These special awards were presented on May 13-14, 2010 and consisted of key awards from scientific, professional and educational organizations, governmental organizations, and overall category awards.

 

Michael Yurko,  16, Detroit Catholic Central High School, Novi, Michigan. 
Project title:  “A Parallel Computational Framework for Solving Quadratic Assignment Problems Exactly
            

Association for Computing Machinery, Third Award of $300
Symantec Corporation, Third Award of $750
Computer Science Category Award, Second Place Award of $1,500

 

Norman Jin, 15, Notre Dame Preparatory School, Pontiac, Michigan. 
Project Title:  “High Efficiency Unity Power Factor Battery Charger

            Florida Institute of Technology – Scholarship Award of $12,500 per year, renewable annually

 

Siddhartha Jena, 16, International Academy, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. 
Project Title:  “High Cholesterol Impairs Wate and Gas Transport in Red Blood Cells and is Ameliorated by the PLA2 Inhibitor ONO-RS-082

Medicine and Health Sciences Category Award, First Place Award of $3,000

 

Sherwin Wu, 17, Detroit Country Day School, Beverly Hills, Michigan. 
Project Title: “Glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) Transferase 2 (GCNT2) Gene Expression Highly Influences Breast Cancer Metastasis and Promotes an Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT)”
